Korean Language School

I am heading a adopted Korean children’s mentoring program called Big Sib Lil’ Sib (BSLS), and last weekend, we had an additional feature added to our biweekly event – Korean language school! Before our usual BSLS event, we added an hour and half of quality education. We had always had some indirect requests from the parents who wanted their children to have a basic grasp for their root language and culture, but this term, the Big Sib mentors really took up the challenge. There were always some sporadic language lessons offered through Miniversity courses (unofficial, student run courses on basically anything), but our school would be geared specifically for the needs of families with young children.

Our classes, even though it was the first try, were extremely organized and the students were eager to learn. We divided everybody into three groups – elementary school, middle school, and parents. Each class had two teachers (Dartmouth students, of course) making a 3:1 student-teacher ratio. The classes took place at Dartmouth Hall, which is a classroom building for normal Dartmouth courses, but is available for use during the weekends. We prepared handouts and folders for our students beforehand so that they could take it home and review. The entire operation was student planned – logistics, teaching, payment, materials, etc.

Ever since winter term, we had surveyed parents to see what their specific needs were, and I think we’re off to a good start, because we had amazing student response. One of the parents actually e-mailed us later saying that their children wanted to do their homework as soon as they got home! The teachers were just as pleased, because kids were picking things up so fast. Some families are actually visiting Korea over the summer, so this will be real practical knowledge for them.

Also, having our BSLS event afterwards was a great transition because the kids could relax and play a little, while parents practiced their elementary Korean amongst themselves. It feels great to be part of a new program, especially since there was such a need for such a language school. Starting fall term, we’re going to make our operation a bit bigger and more frequent – hopefully our students will be able to keep up with us!
