Winter Blues?

The term is slowly coming to an end which for many students means long quiet nights in Baker Library or Novack Café preparing for exams. It may be winter, but this term has been anything but uneventful. Besides skiing and snowboarding at the Dartmouth Skiway, winter has been the term for Dartmouth’s very own performing arts groups.

In January as part of the week long celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, students organized a festival of arts that showcased visual arts, spoken word and performance. With the theme “Lifted: A Celebration of Unity and Songs,” student groups from across campus came together through positive self expression. The groups ranged from the Occum Pond (Native American Drumming Group) and the Ceili Irish Dancers to Dartmouth Argentine Tango Society and Vandana (Dartmouth’s South Asian Dance Group). The diversity of groups not only represented the diversity of performances but also the diversity of groups on campus.

In honor of Black History Month the brothers of Kappa Kappa Kappa put on the first annual “Movement” – a celebration of the unique hip hop culture at Dartmouth and a way to showcase the talents of our own student body from the spoken word to dance. Performances by popular hip hop dance groups SHEBA and UJIMA opened the event to a crowded room. Soulscribes, an award winning slam poetry group, shared thoughtful pieces from social issues to personal experiences. The finale of the event was a showcase of Dartmouth’s very own up and coming artists. Jonathan Ball ’08, Simon Trabelsi ’08 and Phil Chang ’08, known respectively as JBall, Young Ivy and Intrikit are currently producing their own albums or are being featured on other albums.

So if you’re worried about not being able to handle the cold, don’t. You are kept too busy to be worrying about it. And as someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, that really does mean a lot.
